Popeyes' crazy-popular fried-chicken sandwich returns Nov. 3 - The Dallas Morning News

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen says its fried-chicken sandwich will return Sunday, Nov. 3 after two months of a hiatus. The chicken chain ran out of product and couldn’t handle demand in late August. It pulled the brand-new, crazy-popular product from its stores and promised a return.

The scarcity of the chicken sandwich fueled its popularity. When it was still (barely) available, some Dallas-Fort Worth residents participated in what we’ll call chicken hysteria, waiting in drive-thru lines that took hours and stretched into major streets. Many restaurants had a small amount of chicken sandwiches, and they went fast.

Popeyes fried-chicken sandwich is selling out in North Texas.
The Popeyes app — one of several ways the company promoted itself even while the sandwich wasn't available — confirms that the sandwich will make its re-debut on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019.

Did more people want the sandwich because fewer people could get it? Surely. The scarcity principle worked well for Popeyes, and the company weathered the media storm brilliantly. Popeyes even poked fun at itself during the sandwich shortage, telling customers if they really wanted a chicken sandwich, they could just buy Popeyes chicken tenders and build their own sandwich ... if they bring their own bun.

Joke’s on you?

The sandwich is a competitor to Chick-fil-A’s highly popular and simple chicken sandwich. It’s no surprise that Popeyes chose a Sunday to re-debut the fried-chicken sandwich to the masses, as Chick-fil-A stores are closed on Sundays.

Sunday, Nov. 3 is also National Sandwich Day, for anyone still paying attention to those.

How will Popeyes keep up with demand? Has anything changed about the sandwich? Will it work this time? These are questions we don’t know the answer to yet.

And while we hope the sandwich lands in Dallas-Forth on Nov. 3 like it does nationwide, the Popeyes app says “prices and participation may vary.”

We’ll update this story with local details.

I still haven’t eaten Popeyes’ new sandwich, either. Follow Sarah Blaskovich on Twitter at @sblaskovich and I’ll keep you updated.
