Popular peregrine falcon chick dies on Melbourne skyscraper livestream - 7NEWS

A young chick from Melbourne's beloved livestreamed peregrine falcon family has died.

The chick was one of three that hatched in late September in their nest, 33 floors up on a Collins Street skyscraper, where a camera is set up.

Thousands of avian appreciators have watched the little falcons grow on the stream but on Monday morning one of them died.

"It's a very sad morning in Melbourne today," spokesperson Kersley said in a post on the 367 Collins Falcons live stream Facebook page.

"Unfortunately, we have lost one of the chicks this morning. I know it's very hard for some viewers to watch and come to terms with."

The livestreaming camera was turned away from the nest while the volunteer organisers waited for the falcon parents to remove the chick's carcass.

"For the safety of the chicks and us, we will not attempt to remove the carcass," Kersley said.

Organisers tried to remove a chick carcass last season but a surviving chick was frightened and flew off the edge.

"Luckily, the chick returned back to the safety of the nest (but) for this reason, we will not attempt to remove the carcass," the group said.

Fans of the birds expressed their sadness and some called for the stream to be turned back, as death is "part of nature" and they wanted to see how the parents dealt with it.

They appear to have received their wish because, at the time of writing, the camera had been turned back to the nest.

The two surviving chicks were seen sitting up in their box nest on Monday afternoon, looking fluffy and well.

Peregrine falcons are relatively widespread across Australia and can be seen soaring above city streets in search of prey.

The powerful, fast-flying birds enjoy a high vantage point, which is why they have been nesting at 367 Collins Street since 1991.
