Pumpkin, the most popular raccoon on Instagram, has died at the age of four.
Her owner, Laura Young, confirmed on the social media platform that Pumpkin passed away two weeks ago.
"Her passing came as a complete shock to us and we are still trying to come to terms with it," she wrote to 1.4 million followers.
She added: "This little raccoon literally fell into my life when I was going through a tough time. She gave me purpose and gave me confidence."
Laura found newborn Pumpkin with a broken leg hanging out under the shade of a tree in the Bahamas.
Pumpkin's raccoon mother never returned for her, and - as there wasn't an animal rescue nearby - Laura took her home.
She turned Pumpkin into an Instagram star after her rescue in 2014 - and fans flocked to see her adventures.
From munching biscotti biscuits, enjoying avocado and undertaking a late-night snacking mission on pizza, Pumpkin has provided plenty of entertainment.
"My husband said it perfectly, she is now forever dreaming of avocados, eggs, and sips of my leftover tea."
And she was also a force for good - raising attention and funds after Hurricane Dorian struck the neighbouring Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama in September.
But she wasn't just an Instagram star. For Laura and her family, Pumpkin was more like "a permanent toddler".
"For the past five years this little girl was always by my side, through happiness and tears. I like to think she helped prepare me for motherhood."
"Pumpkin would lick the tears from my face and it would make me laugh and smile. She did this so many times."
She would also sometimes share the spotlight with Laura's rescue dogs, Toffee and Oreo.
Laura says Pumpkin's Instagram account will remain active in some form to honour her memory.
"I will continue to keep this account. The format will change but it's important to me to honour our girl Pumps."
"I know how much you all loved and adored her. She is going to be one missed raccoon."

Research on zoo animals focuses more on "familiar" species like gorillas and chimpanzees than less well known ones like the waxy monkey frog, scientists say.
Globally, fish and birds outnumber mammals, reptiles and amphibians in zoos—but the study says mammals are consistently the main focus of research on zoo-housed animals.
This "mammal bias" also exists in wider research, including in the wild, but lead author Dr. Paul Rose, of the University of Exeter, says zoos offer wonderful opportunities to study other species.
The study looked at the last decade of research on zoo-housed animals, both by zoo staff and visiting scientists, and noted the growth and value of such studies.
"Some species, such as chimpanzees, are popular with scientists because we know a lot about them, they are accessible and humans can relate to them," Dr. Rose said.
"As well as being found in zoos, many of these species are relatively easy to find and study in the wild.
"By contrast, it would be hard to find a waxy monkey frog in the rainforest to conduct your research.
"Zoos offer us a fantastic opportunity to study a vast range of species, many of which would be very difficult to observe in their natural habitat.
"Our findings can teach us about conversation, animal health and how best to house them in zoos.
"Despite the mammal bias, the output from zoo research has diversified and zoo animals are being used to answer a whole range of important scientific questions relevant to our lives and their lives."
The study also examined whether research on different animals tended to focus on different topics.
"Lots of mammal studies are about animal welfare, which is great, but we should also research the welfare of fish, birds and anything else we keep in zoos," Dr. Rose said.
"At the moment, we are publishing on the same few species, rather than broadening our scope.
"Obviously we have lots to learn about every species, but opportunities to study many other zoo-housed animals are currently being missed."
Ten years ago, published research identified the need for studies about a range of species beyond much-loved animals such as elephants and primates.
The new study reviewed zoo-based research in the decade since this recommendation and concluded:

神戸市立東須磨小学校の教諭４人が後輩教諭にいじめ行為を繰り返していた問題で、市教育委員会は３１日、加害教諭４人を同日付で分限休職処分とし、給与の支給の停止措置をとった。
分限休職は職員が長期間、療養する場合などに自治体が休職させることができる公務員の制度。市教委は問題把握後の１０月１日から加害教諭４人を自宅で待機させていたが、有給休暇を取得する形式だったため苦情が殺到。同３０日から、長期間の療養などの事情がなくても、重大な不祥事を起こして起訴される恐れがある場合に職員の給与を差し止められる改正条例が施行されていた。
処分について、市教委が諮問した外部の有識者による審査会は「４人の行為の程度に差がある」「起訴されるとまでは言えない」などとして、反対する答申をまとめたが、市教委は「重大な信用失墜があった」として一律処分に踏み切った。
市教委によると、複数の加害教諭が「迷惑をかけた」と退職を申し出ているというが、自主退職すると退職金が支給されるため、申し出を認めない方針を決めている。

Jade Spa, it’s called. Or, the Hawaii Spa.
Signs for both are affixed to and planted in the parking lot of the squat, beige, windowless building sandwiched between a Days Inn and popular eateries Rodeo Goat and Ferris Wheelers. It has been there, along Market Center Boulevard, for more than a decade, so long you no longer even notice it when you drive past. Just, you know, part of the scenery.
“A little atmosphere,” says restaurateur Shannon Wynne, owner of the Goat. “A curiosity.”
Except everyone knows what goes on inside the place that garners high marks on the website called Rubmaps. And now, finally, what police believe to be the last of the Design District’s longtime massage parlors is closed, at least temporarily. It was shuttered by Dallas police and prosecutors who descended on the Jade Spa early Wednesday morning, when it was still dark and the cold rain fell in sheets.
But Wednesday’s operation was not confined to the Dallas city limits. Some officers left from DPD headquarters around 5 in the morning heading to Irving, Grapevine, Arlington, Carrollton – cities in which police say Jade Spa’s property owners and business managers live. What began as another massage parlor take-down, months ago, escalated once investigators began digging into the financials behind one of Dallas longest-operating brothels.

Which is why Wednesday morning’s raid also resulted in the closing of one of Southlake’s most popular and best-reviewed Chinese restaurants – Dragon House. Cops allege the restaurant is “directly tied to Jade Spa’s owners,” cops said Wednesday. Same management, alleges DPD, same money.
In all, six men and women were arrested, each charged with promoting prostitution and engaging in organized criminal activity. Not one of those arrested included the young women living inside the Jade Spa.
“This is significant – the biggest operation since re-establishing vice,” said Maj. Max Geron, who oversees DPD’s Criminal Investigations Bureau. We were standing inside the Jade Spa, near a shrine containing a statue of a Buddha and sticks of incense. The place smelled vaguely of mold, probably from one of the shower rooms.
Vice cops have busted up about a dozen similar operations since the unit was reconstituted in January – usually in the northwest part of town, along Walnut Hill and Royal lanes near Harry Hines Boulevard, where the selling of sex is just one long-standing industry among many. The routine is now routine: Officers go in with warrants and come out with workers who live on the property.
In the case of the Jade Spa, seven women were confined to a single room, on thin mats placed atop tattered sheets of Owens Corning insulation.

Their belongings were stashed in a room that used to serve as the Jade Spa’s sauna, six pieces of luggage piled high next to a discarded ATM. Another bag was stashed in a back room filled with gallons of Listerine and lotion.
The workers were escorted outside, without cuffs; then, interviewed by police; then, introduced to service providers offering shelter and support. If they declined the offer, the women were given their phones and bags and told they were free to go.
“They are not the main source of the problem,” Geron said. “It’s the business owners and the investors that facilitate and run these operations. It would get us absolutely nowhere to prosecute the women living inside these buildings. In fact, it would do more harm than good. We choose to invest our limited resources in taking down those who are profiting off of them. They’re the ones living in nice condos. They’re the once living in the suburbs with large homes. They’re not the ones sleeping with customers, sleeping on insulation.”
Vice cops have always known about the Jade Spa. One of the undercover officers out on Wednesday’s operation said he made his first arrest as a Dallas cop here – “like, a decade ago.” But that was when Dallas police treated workers like criminals. “Before we knew about trafficking.”
And for years they let it be. Because they didn’t have enough cops to shutter all the massage parlors in town. Not then. Definitely not now. Not with just 12 vice cops.

But according to the search warrant affidavit, police started receiving complaints about the Jade Spa earlier this year. Cops said Wednesday it was just a matter of time before they turned their attention back to the building that sits along a stretch of recently built apartments and low-rent and high-end hotels, including the Hilton Anatole, offering no shortage of clients.
Undercover operations, conducted from June to October, only confirmed what they always knew. Inside the Jade Spa, anything goes, so long as a customer has $150 and an hour.
But as investigators began digging into the Jade Spa’s financials, they discovered a “detailed, complex, and large criminal enterprise,” according to an affidavit. “Although the operation is an illicit one, it is still operated and structured like a true business.”
Investigators say they watched drivers carry money from the Jade Spa to Dragon House, and that bank records show proceeds from both establishments were kept in a single account. Police said Wednesday they also executed search warrants at several local banks. In a press release, the department said “approximately $370,000 related to the criminal operation was seized and/or frozen.”

Court records do not yet show the attorneys for those taken into custody. The phone at Dragon House went unanswered.
Wednesday afternoon, city attorneys went to the county courthouse and got District Court Judge Maricela Moore to close down the Jade Spa – at least until a hearing in mid-November. Since the raid on the Number One spa earlier this month, community prosecutors now accompany vice cops on these operations – then go directly to court, to padlock places that historically reopened once the warrants were executed.
“Oh, my God, we couldn’t even believe the city was turning a blind eye to this last hold-out,” Wynne said Wednesday.
The owner of Rodeo Goat said he has tried for years to buy the building – for parking, if nothing else. And always he’s been told no. I called some of the surrounding property owners and leasing agents, and nobody wanted to talk on the record. Except Wynne, whose Meddlesome Moth sits less than half a mile away.
“Because,” he said, “I am elated it’s going away.”

Attackers have breached Web.com and two top domain name registrars that it owns, NetworkSolutions.com and Register.com, according to Krebs on Security. Web.com issued a security notice advising customers that they will be forced to reset their passwords the next time they log on. Such breaches are particularly worrying, because domain name registrar customers are website owners, and around 8.7 million of them are registered with those companies, according to Krebs.
Web.com said that "a third-party gained unauthorized access to a limited number of its computer systems in late August 2019, and as a result, account information may have been accessed," adding that "no credit card data was compromised as a result of that incident."
However, it determined that contact details like "name, address, phone numbers, email address and information about the services that we offer to a given account holder" were exposed. While Web.com asked customers to reset their passwords, it said that "we encrypt account passwords and do not believe this information is vulnerable as a specific result of this incident."
Such a hack might seem relatively minor, but domain name registrars sell website names like Engadget.com and assign them IP addresses. As such, they're an essential cog in the internet -- if an attacker succeeds in changing a domain name, they can take control of an entire website.
For instance, hackers once compromised the domain name registrar of a Brazilian bank and redirected users to lookalike sites that stole their credentials and installed malware. "If your DNS is under the control of cybercriminals, you're basically screwed," Kaspersky's Dmitry Bestuzhev told Wired about the incident.

במסמכים שהגיש פ' לבית המשפט מוזכרים כמה מהמקרים שפענח: במקרה אחד, למשל, הצליח להוציא הודאה ברצח מחשוד שלתאו הוכנס, וכאשר סיים אמר למפעיליו שהוא חושד כי אותו אדם ביצע רצח נוסף, וביקש לחזור לתא. המפעילים הסכימו, ועד מהרה התברר כי פ' צדק: החשוד הודה ברצח נוסף, והביא למציאת מעבדה ביתית לייצור משתיקי קול ואלפי שקלים שנשדדו מאחד הנרצחים. אותו חשוד נידון לשני מאסרי עולם.
במקרה אחר הצליח פ' דווקא לנקות את שמו של חשוד ברצח, אך "על הדרך" הביא לתפיסת המבצעים האמיתיים. הוא הוכנס לתאו של אדם שהיה חשוד כי רצח ידידה שלו. לאחר שעה ביקש לצאת מהתא, ואמר למפעילים כי הוא חש שמדובר באדם חף מפשע. החוקרים התעקשו ואמרו שיש בידיהם ראיות חזקות, ופ' הסכים לחזור לתא לדיבוב נוסף. הפעם הצליח לשכנע את העצור לומר לו כי הוא חושד בקרובי משפחה של הגרוש של הנרצחת, והוא אף מסר לו את שמותיהם ומספרי הטלפון שלהם. המשטרה חקרה ומצאה כי אותם טלפונים אכן אוכנו באזור הרצח בזמן האירוע. בחקירתם הם הודו, שחזרו את הרצח, ומסרו למשטרה את הסכין שבאמצעותו בוצע.
בתי המשפט ציינו לפעמים לטובה את פעילותו של פ'. בתיק רצח שפוענח בזכות הודאה שחילץ מהחשוד, כתב אחד השופטים: "אוסיף ואציין כי המדובב פ', אשר התגלה כאדם שנון וממולח, היודע אף פרק בהלכות הליכי משפט, נחקר בבית המשפט, כאשר חקירתו נמשכה על פני שתי ישיבות. בחקירתו הוא נשמע אמין, כאשר לא נתגלו כל סתירות בין אשר נאמר בחקירה לבין הדברים שנשמעו בהקלטות - וכי ניכר היה בו כי הינו מודע לחובתו שלא לחצות קווים אדומים, והקפיד על מילויה של חובה זו".
כשהגיע לבית המשפט, העיד פ' מאחורי פרגוד ובפנים מכוסות נגד העבריינים אותם דובב. אלא שדווקא בכלא הוא נחשף שוב ושוב בשל התנהלות לא זהירה של שב"ס. ב-2005 הועבר פ' מכלא שיטה שבצפון לאגף פתוח בבית המעצר ניצן. הוא התריע שבניצן ישבו עבריינים רבים שאותם דובב, ולכן זהותו עלולה להיחשף - אך ללא הועיל. זמן קצר לאחר העברתו, לא פחות מארבעה אסירים שהפליל בעבר זיהו אותו בשמו האמיתי.
במקרה אחר הוכנס פ' לאותו תא בכלא קישון יחד עם חשוד ברצח שאותו דובב. תוך זמן קצר שמע אותו חשוד - שאף הורשע מאוחר יותר ברצח - כי אסירים אחרים באגף מכנים את פ' בשמו האמיתי, ולא בשם בו הזדהה בפניו בעת הדיבוב. הוא הבין כי מדובר במדובב והתעמת איתו. במקרה אחר, כאשר המתין להסעה ב"פוסטה", נכנס לחדר ההמתנה אסיר שהפליל בסחר בנשק. אותו אסיר חשף בפני כל הנוכחים כי פ' הוא מדובב - והם החלו לקלל אותו ולאיים עליו. אלו לא המקרים היחידים.
לאחר חשיפת זהותו, הועבר פ' באוגוסט 2005 לאגף ההפרדה, משום שגורמי המודיעים בשב"ס העריכו שיש סכנה מוחשית לחייו. מאז, לאורך כמעט 15 שנה, שהה לבדו בתא, 23 שעות ביממה. הסכנה לחייו כה גדולה שנקבע כי לא ניתן אפילו להכניסו ל"הפרדה זוגית", עם שותף לתא שייבחר בקפידה, מחשש שאותו שותף יגויס על ידי ארגוני פשיעה כדי לפגוע בו. ב-2012 כתב אחד מאנשי המודיעין בשב"ס חוות דעת לפיה פ' "מוגדר טעון הגנה ברמה א' לאור כוונות להרעילו, על מנת למנוע ממנו להעיד כנגד עבריינים בתיק רצח, ולאור היותו עד תביעה כנגד עבריינים רבים".
מדי חצי שנה מאשר בית המשפט את המשך החזקתו של פ' בהפרדה. אף שהשופטים הכירו בכך שמדובר בתוצאה של מחדלי שב"ס, הסכנה לחייו של פ' לא מתירה כל ברירה אחרת. גם הוא עצמו מודע לכך. כפי שהעיד בפני בית המשפט, הוא נמנע אפילו מיציאה לטיולים בחצר אגף ההפרדה, מחשש שיזוהה שם.
ב-2013 תבע פ' את המדינה. הוא טען כי בחוזה ההפעלה עליו חתם, התחייבה המשטרה לעשות כל שביכולתה על מנת למנוע את חשיפת זהותו, ואף כי הובטח לו שיפעלו כדי שיזכה לשחרור מוקדם לאחר שני שלישים ממאסרו. עוד טען כי האחריות המוחלטת עליו, כאסיר, היא של שב"ס, שהתרשל פעם אחר פעם בשמירה על ביטחונו. לבסוף טען כי במסגרת הסכומים שהובטחו לו תמורת כל פיצוח של תיק רצח - נותר למדינה חוב כלפיו של 90 אלף שקלים. המדינה הגיעה להסדר פשרה לפיו שילמה לפ' כמעט 900 אלף שקלים, מבלי שהודתה בטענות כלפיה.
הפיצוי לא סייע להוציא את פ' מהמלכוד אליו נקלע: בשל העובדה שהוא חייב להיות מבודד מאסירים אחרים, כדי לשמור על חייו, לא ניתן לשלבו בטיפול קבוצתי לעברייני מין. מבלי שעבר טיפול, גורמי המקצוע מעריכים כי הוא עדיין מסוכן לציבור - ולכן ועדת השחרורים דחתה פעמיים בקשות לקיצור עונשו.
בעבר קבע גורם טיפולי כי פ' הוא "אדם אלים, בעל סף תסכול נמוך", והוסיף כי לא ניתן היה לבצע אפילו הערכת מסוכנות, שכן הוא "התנהג בתוקפנות כלפי הבודק". אלא שבשנה שעברה, לאחר שנדחתה בקשתו הראשונה לשחרור מוקדם, הוא עבר סדרת מפגשים עם פסיכולוגית של שב"ס, שנועדו להכינו לטיפול שיקומי. אותה פסיכולוגית קבעה כי שיתף פעולה וגילה מוטיבציה להשתתף בטיפול - אך בשורה התחתונה, את הטיפול עצמו לא יוכל לעבור בשל כליאתו בהפרדה.
פ' אף הגיש לוועדת השחרורים תוכנית טיפול ושיקום שהוכנה עבורו באופן פרטי, שהוא יוכל להשתתף בה תחת פיקוח אם ישוחרר. הוא טען כי ממילא הוא אמור להשתחרר בעוד כשלוש שנים וחצי, עם תום תקופת מאסרו, בין אם יעבור טיפול ובין אם לאו, וכי אם יזכה לשחרור מוקדם ניתן יהיה להטיל עליו תנאי פיקוח הדוקים יותר. ועדת השחרורים דחתה זאת, וסברה שבסופו של יום, כל עוד הוא מוגדר מסוכן ולא עבר שיקום, לא ניתן לשחררו. לפני כשנה הגיש פ' בקשת חנינה לנשיא המדינה, ראובן ריבלין. כעת הוא ממתין לתשובה.
משב"ס נמסר בתגובה כי "סוגיית הסכם הפשרה נדונה בערכאות המשפטיות וחשוב להדגיש כי שב"ס לא נדרש לתשלום פיצוי כל שהוא. על כן, בכל הנוגע להסכם הפשרה אליו הגיעו יש לפנות למעורבים בו", נמסר בתגובה משירות בתי הסוהר. "ככלל, סוגיית הטיפול שניתן לאסירים פליליים, בוחנת מספר מרכיבים בינהם את סוג העבירה, רמת מסוכנותו של האסיר, מצבו הנפשי, מוכנותו לשתף פעולה עם ההליך הטיפולי, המלצות ביטחון לגבי האסיר ועוד קריטריונים נוספים. שב"ס הינו גורם ממליץ בפני ועדת השחרורים ואין בידיו את מכלול השיקולים הנבחנים בועדות השחרורים טרם קבלת החלטה על קיצורי עונשי מאסר".
ממשטרת ישראל נמסר בתגובה כי "הפעלתו של פ' בוצעה כנדרש וללא דופי. באשר לטענותיו בנוגע לחשיפתו ולתנאי כליאתו יש לפנות לשב"ס".
沖縄県那覇市の首里城が全焼した火災で、NHKの昼ニュースで前日に収めた首里城の写真撮影者の名前をめぐり、ネット上が騒然としている。
撮影者の名前は、自らを「レンタル」するユニークな活動で有名な「レンタルなんもしない人」（36＝本名：森本祥司さん、以下、レンタルさん）。ネット上では「お名前がのってるのでびっくりしました」など驚きの声が上がっていた。J-CASTニュースで10月31日、レンタルさんに電話取材した。

レンタルさん（＠morimotoshoji）は、「レンタルなんもしない人」というサービスを展開。本人はツイッターで、「1人で入りにくい店、ゲームの人数あわせ、花見の場所とりなど、ただ1人分の人間の存在だけが必要なシーンでご利用ください」と呼び掛けている。NHKが放送する「ドキュメント72時間」でも紹介されるなど、メディアの注目度も高い。
今回の発端は、31日正午に放送されたNHKの昼ニュース。首里城火災のニュースで、前日30日18時半ごろに収められた正殿の写真が扱われていたが、写真撮影者として「レンタルなんもしない人」の名前が入っていた。また、電話取材の形で、レンタルさんの談話も放送された。
放送内容をめぐり、ネット上では、
「びっくりした」
「不意打ちすぎた」
など驚きの声が相次いで上がった。
自身の名前がニュースで出ていたことを指摘する趣旨の声が多く上がっていたことを、本人はどう受け止めているか。レンタルさんに31日、J-CASTニュースが取材したところによると、沖縄在住者から依頼があり、現地に行っていたという。正殿のある有料区域に入ろうとしたが時間的に間に合わず、門の外から撮影。その写真をツイッターに公開していたところ、焼失直前の正殿を捉えた写真として、ニュースで使われることになったという。
レンタルさんは取材に対し、「シリアスなニュースなので、ふざけたアカウント名でクレジット入れさせるなんて、ふざけてるのか、というような反応はないことはなかった。申し訳ない気持ちも少しあります」と振り返る。
また、レンタルさんは、「（先方から）『クレジットどうしますか』と言われて、『入れて頂けたらありがたいですが、どっちでもいいです』などと答えた。いやな気持ちになる人も確かにいるよなと思いました」と語っていた。

那覇市の首里城の正殿などが焼けた火災を受け、玉城デニー知事は３１日、記者会見し「大変ショック。管理責任を負う者として遺憾」と述べた。県庁には「沖縄の心のよりどころを復元してほしい」という声が届いており、寄付を受け付ける口座を開設するよう準備しているという。
玉城知事は再建について「必ず復元します。多くの皆様の力を貸していただきたい。全身全霊で取り組む」と明言。１１月１日に、首相官邸などを訪れ、協力を要請するという。
